I am thinking about my oldest today – who headed back up to Orillia to receive their 10 year award for attending YLCC (Youth Leadership Camps Canada) as a camper and this year (their first) as staff. Each summer I have watched them grow up a little more, become transformed by the experiences at camp and become more self aware. I have given credit, which I realize now was in error, to the staff for nurturing those changes within them. No, instead, it was their personal fortitude, their direct experience not just going through the different sessions and activities, but overcoming obstacles that went beyond what was planned or scripted. To say that I am proud of the person who has grown through all of those ten years to become who they are today, is an understatement. Thank you Gabe for continuing to teach me what a true leader is. Thank you for being fearless and in charge of who you are, and always being there to stand up for those who do not have a voice in the majority, even when they should.
